Hanseatic Hospital Stralsund strengthens its surgery department

Helios Hanseatic Hospital Stralsund ontinues to invest in experienced surgeons and has appointed Dr. Alexander Klose as the new senior physician for abdominal surgery and proctology. The 53-year-old physician from Berlin succeeds Senior Physician Dr. Beate Drews, who left the hospital on May 31.

After appointing the new physician, the hospital was able to fill another key vacancy in its Department of Surgery. “Dr. Klose is an excellent fit for our team, both professionally and personally. His many years of experience will help ensure that our patients continue to benefit from a high-performing surgical department offering a broad range of treatments and the highest quality standards,” said Prof. Matthias Birth, Head of Surgery and Medical Director.

Dr. Klose brings extensive experience gained at several renowned hospitals. His surgical expertise focuses primarily on upper gastrointestinal surgery, including procedures involving the pancreas and liver, as well as colorectal surgery. In addition, he has extensive experience in treating complex surgical conditions and in advancing medical quality standards.

Dr. Klose said that he chose Stralsund deliberately. He was particularly impressed by the hospital’s broad medical portfolio. “I was surprised by how well the hospital is equipped and by the wide range of surgical services offered here. The hospital has excellent structures in place and provides outstanding conditions for delivering high-quality patient care. That was a major attraction for me.”

The special charm of Stralsund

Stralsund itself also quickly won him over. “I like Stralsund very much. The city has a unique charm, and many everyday errands can easily be done by bicycle. In fact, my bicycle was one of the first things I brought with me,” says the father of three, who has already come to appreciate the beauty of the region.

Born and raised in Krefeld, Dr. Klose studied medicine in Budapest and Berlin. He completed his specialist training at several hospitals in Berlin before moving to Bielefeld, where he spent eight years at a major surgical clinic. There, he first served as a senior physician and later as deputy head senior physician. He also coordinated the Colorectal Cancer Center and played a key role in its further development.

In 2020, Dr. Klose returned to Berlin and worked as a senior physician at the Alexianer hospital group until moving to Stralsund. Alongside his clinical work, he is committed to the education and mentoring of young medical professionals. Passing on knowledge and guiding junior colleagues is particularly important to him. “I look forward to contributing in this area in Stralsund as well and to helping shape the future of surgery together with the team.”
