New guidelines for the treatment of vascular malformations
The German Society of Neurology has published new recommendations for the treatment of vascular malformations in the brain. The guideline update was coordinated by Prof. Dr. med. Holger Poppert. As Head of Neurology at Helios Hospital München-West, he is incorporating the recently published recommendations directly into the establishment of a new head center.
Vascular malformations in the brain can be life-threatening. The German Society of Neurology (DGN) has published an updated guideline for cerebral vascular malformations to ensure that those affected receive the best possible care after diagnosis. The work on the updated guideline was coordinated by Prof. Dr. med. Holger Poppert, Head of Neurology at Helios Hospital München West.
Those affected by vascular malformations in the brain can suffer from a wide range of symptoms. From cerebral hemorrhages to tinnitus and epileptic seizures, the level of suffering varies greatly. Often there are no symptoms at all and the malformations are discovered by chance when the head is imaged for another reason. "Every case is different," says Prof. Poppert. "Treatment is by no means always indicated; the risks and benefits must be carefully weighed up for each patient. This makes it all the more important to be able to follow clear recommendations for action once a diagnosis has been made. We have laid the foundation for this with the updated S1 guideline."
The expertise of representatives from neurosurgery, neuroradiology, radiotherapy and neurology was incorporated into the new recommendations for action. "We worked together in an incredibly constructive way; everyone looked far beyond the boundaries of their respective specialties," enthuses Poppert.
The new DGN recommendations are applied directly at Helios Hospital München West. Among other things, they are being incorporated into the establishment of a new, cross-site head center, which Prof. Poppert is currently setting up with colleagues from the Helios Amper-Hospital Dachau.
Helios Hospital München West is a modern referral medical centre with 412 beds located in the Pasing District and the affiliated hospital of the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. The Hospital consists of the Central Emergency Department and 20 other referral departments and provides comprehensive assistance at academic level. Annually, about 24,000 inpatients and 31,000 outpatients rely on the experience and knowledge of about 950 employees. Besides quality medical care and assistance, they particularly appreciate short distances and private family-like setting.
