New hospital building in Oberhausen opens its doors
Where construction workers could still be seen until recently, the new building at Helios St. Elisabeth Hospital Oberhausen is now coming to life: step by step, its bright corridors are filling with patients, staff, and visitors. The new cafeteria on the ground floor was the first area to open in the new building. With its inviting outdoor terrace, it will also provide a new meeting place for visitors. At almost the same time, the first inpatient wards moved into their new premises on the upper floors — a transition that had been carefully prepared in advance and carried out according to a tightly coordinated schedule. The new building also includes a new comfort ward. The central information desk and the dermatology outpatient clinic will move into their new premises shortly.
Combining tradition and modernity
With a history spanning almost 160 years, Helios St. Elisabeth Hospital is the oldest hospital in Oberhausen and has a long tradition. “We work within a historic building structure. We want to preserve its special character while also meeting today’s requirements for modern patient accommodation,” explains Hospital Managing Director Anna Berrischen. “The new building allows us to achieve exactly that. It provides noticeably more space, a new sense of openness, and a bright, fresh, welcoming atmosphere that benefits both our patients and our teams in their everyday routines.”
To strengthen Oberhausen’s medical infrastructure in the long term, Helios is investing around €20 million in the hospital. The new building provides space for approximately 90 beds in bright single and double rooms. After construction was affected by unforeseen delays, including extensive repairs following water damage at the beginning of the year, the new building is now ready for patients and clinical operations to the planned standard of quality.
The next milestones ahead
The hospital’s phased expansion will continue over the coming months. The next major milestone is the opening of the new central operating suite, scheduled for the beginning of next year. The third phase, which includes the completion of a new elective outpatient clinic and the creation of an outpatient surgery center, is planned for the end of 2027. An official opening ceremony will take place once the central operating suite has been completed, with the exact date to be announced in due course.
“Once the new building is fully completed, our hospital, with its long-standing tradition, will be well positioned to provide modern, patient-centered care in the region for years to come,” explains Dr. Klaus Findt, Medical Director of the hospital. “I am proud of the dedication and collaboration shown by all our departments. With this strong team spirit, we will successfully complete the next stages and bring this pioneering project across the finish line together.”
