Pforzheim expands its oncology services with the appointment of a new chief physician
Prof. Heinz is an experienced specialist in internal medicine with expertise in medical oncology, hematology, palliative medicine, and infectious diseases. His clinical expertise covers the full spectrum of oncology, with particular experience in the treatment of colorectal, pancreatic, and lung cancers. In hematology, his main areas of focus include lymphomas, leukemias, and infection-related issues.
Most recently, Prof. Heinz served as Chief Physician of Medical Department II at Caritas-Krankenhaus Bad Mergentheim, a position he had held since 2021. There, he was responsible for several specialties, including hematology and oncology. At Helios Hospital Pforzheim, he will work with colleagues from the hospital’s certified organ-specific cancer centers to further develop oncology care. This will combine established surgical treatment — particularly abdominal and thoracic surgery — with modern drug-based cancer therapies. In addition to established chemotherapy, an increasing range of treatment options is now available, including various immunotherapies, antibody therapies, and targeted drugs that specifically attack tumor cells. Combining these different approaches can improve patients’ chances of successful treatment.
To ensure that every patient receives the most appropriate individualized care, each cancer case is discussed by specialists from different disciplines at an interdisciplinary tumor board. The hospital also works closely with the Psychosocial Cancer Counseling Center, which provides valuable support to patients beyond their cancer treatment.
Helios Hospital Pforzheim has a dedicated unit for patients with hematological diseases that meets specific structural, technical, and hygiene requirements. Patients with leukemia or lymphoma are at increased risk of infection because of their severely weakened immune systems and therefore require special protection.
Another key priority is the further development of palliative care. The goal is to support people with incurable, progressive diseases while maintaining the best possible quality of life. Palliative care focuses on relieving distressing symptoms such as pain, shortness of breath, and nausea, while also providing support for patients dealing with fears and concerns. Care is provided by a multidisciplinary team of physicians, nurses, specially trained palliative care nurses, psychologists, chaplains, and therapists from various disciplines. “With Prof. Heinz, we are gaining an experienced and renowned expert who will take responsibility for our oncology services and play a key role in their further development. I am delighted that his expertise will allow us to expand our range of treatments and provide patients with even more comprehensive cancer care,” says Emre Nazli, Managing Director of the hospital.
