New head of Gynecology and Obstetrics in Berlin-Buch
As of October 2026, Dr. Sebastian Hentsch has taken over as Head of Gynecology and Obstetrics at Helios Hospital Berlin-Buch. He succeeds Dr. Annette Isbruch, who served as Acting Head of Obstetrics, and Dr. Christine Mau, Acting Head of Gynecology and Head of the Breast Center. Most recently, Dr. Hentsch worked as a Senior Physician at the University Women’s Hospital in Düsseldorf.
He specializes in both urogynecology and endometriosis. In Berlin-Buch, he now leads two large, modern departments with experienced teams providing high-quality medical care to patients and expectant mothers. Two new delivery rooms at Helios Hospital Berlin-Buch are also scheduled to open shortly after he takes up his new position. “I look forward to working with my colleagues to provide our patients with professional care based on trust. Both gynecology and obstetrics are important points of contact for women when it comes to sensitive and emotional issues such as gynecological health, family planning, and childbirth. I am very aware of the responsibility that my teams and I carry in this regard, and I am taking on my new role with great motivation. Helios Hospital Berlin-Buch is a renowned medical center where I can make the best possible use of my experience and qualifications and contribute to the continued development of both departments,” says Dr. Hentsch.
Dr. Sebastian Hentsch studied medicine at Leipzig University and obtained his medical license at the University Women’s Hospital in Leipzig. He earned his doctorate in pediatrics and neonatology and also completed his specialist training in gynecology and obstetrics at the University Women’s Hospital in Leipzig. He subsequently worked first as a Senior Physician and later as a Lead Senior Physician at the Evangelical Hospital in Düsseldorf. He went on to serve as Head of the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics at Städtisches Klinikum Solingen and as a specialist in gynecologic oncology for Médecins Sans Frontières (Ärzte ohne Grenzen e.V.) in Malawi. As a Senior Physician at the University Women’s Hospital in Düsseldorf, he also coordinated the Endometriosis Center and headed the Pelvic Floor Center.
In addition, Dr. Hentsch has experience as an investigator and sub-investigator in numerous clinical studies of drug-based and surgical therapies. He also volunteers as a gynecologic oncologist on the international online tumor board of Camfomedics e.V. in cooperation with Baptist Hospital in Mbingu, Cameroon.
Prof. Dr. Henning T. Baberg, Medical Director and Head of the Departments of Cardiology and Nephrology at Helios Hospital Berlin-Buch, comments on Dr. Hentsch’s appointment:
“With Dr. Hentsch, we have gained an experienced expert in gynecology and obstetrics, with particular expertise in endometriosis. We look forward to working with him and are confident that his specializations, national and international experience, and extensive expertise will bring fresh ideas and further strengthen collaboration between the two departments. We aim to provide a trusted environment for patients with gynecological concerns or conditions, as well as for expectant mothers, while offering them the full range of consultation, diagnostic, and treatment options. In Dr. Hentsch, we have found a highly qualified specialist to help us achieve this goal. A warm welcome to Berlin-Buch.”
Over the past four years, Dr. Hentsch has been responsible for the endometriosis outpatient clinic at the University Women’s Hospital in Düsseldorf, providing interdisciplinary care for patients with endometriosis. He holds a special qualification from the Endometriosis Research Foundation and the European Endometriosis League and has more than 20 years of experience in the surgical treatment of endometriosis, particularly using minimally invasive techniques.
On the importance of comprehensive, interdisciplinary care for patients with endometriosis, Dr. Hentsch explains: “Endometriosis is a common condition that also affects young women and can significantly reduce quality of life for many patients, particularly, though not exclusively, because of chronic pain. In everyday gynecological care, whether in a hospital or an outpatient practice, there is often too little time to adequately address the complex symptoms and individual needs of patients with endometriosis. Surgery is usually only one component of endometriosis treatment. Hormonal and other medication-based therapies form the mainstay of treatment. In some cases, psychosomatic care and pain management approaches are also necessary and should be complemented by lifestyle changes. Addressing family planning and the desire to have children is also an important part of comprehensive endometriosis care.”
Under Dr. Hentsch’s leadership, Helios Hospital Berlin-Buch plans to establish a comprehensive range of outpatient and inpatient services for women with suspected or diagnosed endometriosis. Interdisciplinary collaboration with surgery, urology, pain management, and psychosomatic medicine, as well as with fertility centers and networks such as FertiPROTEKT, will enable comprehensive care in accordance with current clinical guidelines.
This approach is also particularly important for patients treated at the Breast Center, Gynecologic Cancer Center, and Oncology Center. It can help preserve patients’ chances of having children in the future as effectively as possible following cancer treatment or surgery for endometriosis.
